Construction of the course, known initially as Shrub Hill, began in late 1923 at the instigation of George Reeves, a local builder. He commissioned two well-known professionals, James Braid - five times Open Champion - and Abe Mitchell, a local Professional, to design the course, which opened for play in May 1924.
